Enter The Void Trailer

With Enter the Void, Gaspar Noe (Irreversible) made a definitive drug/avant-garde film based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead.

I haven't been more intrigued by a trailer in a long time, and I come to find it's available On Demand via IFC in theaters.
This has become priority status!!

iRetrophone iPhone Docks

Hanging up on someone just isn’t as satisfying as it used to be. Scratch that. Hanging up on someone isn’t as satisfying as we imagine it would be… if we had any point of reference. Just because we grew up on cellphones and YouTube instead of rotary and Betamax doesn’t mean we can’t get no satisfaction. In this case it’s something as simple as the iRetrofone iPhone Dock. Each iRetrofone is hand-sculpted and hand-cast in urethane resin and is compatible with sync and charge. It comes in a variety of styles ranging from clear to steampunk and also includes bright red if you’re going for that emergency Batphone vibe. Since the handset is fully functional when you dock your iPhone (not included of course), you’re probably going to have to upgrade your plan because this is reason enough to actually talk on the phone. Even if it is just to hang up. $195+

How Bout Ya Smartphone Battery Lasts A Week.....

UTexas researchers develop organic battery, aim for week-long use in smartphones
Christopher Bielawski, a brilliant mind working at the University of Texas at Austin, had this to say about his newest discovery: "I would love it if my iPhone was thinner and lighter, and the battery lasted a month or even a week instead of a day; with an organic battery, it may be possible." Anyone that has ever owned an iPhone (or a smartphone or any sort, really) can grok just how bold those words are, but according to Mr. Bielawski, "we're now starting to get a handle on the fundamental chemistry needed to make this dream a commercial reality." At the center of this potential revolution is a newfangled organic battery recently detailed in the journal Science, but just as important is the artificial photosynthesis that the research also touches on. Bielawski and colleague Jonathan Sessler have seemingly figured out how to create an electron transfer process that can proceed in the opposite direction, with this forward and backward switching of electron flow opening up new avenues for the historically stagnant battery innovation market. Granted, these guys have yet to demonstrate that the process can occur in a condensed phase, so actual commercialization is probably a century millennium or two out, but hey -- at least our list of "awesome thing that'll probably never happen" has grown by one.

UK Animators Use Cellphone and Microscope To Film Smallest Stop-Motion Animation Ever

Dot, Star of the World's Smallest Stop-Motion Animation

Using a Nokia N8 smartphone and a CellScope, the team behind the Wallace & Gromit series has made the world’s smallest stop-motion animation film.

Follow 0.35-inch-tall Dot as she runs through an obstacle course made of British currency, rides a bumblebee and stitches her way out of trouble. The music is catchy too.

Animators at the UK studio Aardman used a 3D printer to make 50 different versions of Dot, because she is too small to manipulate or bend like they would other stop-motion animation characters. The figurine’s tiny features stretched the limit of the printer — any smaller and it would be hard to make distinct limbs. Each one was hand-painted by artists looking through a microscope.

Directors Ed Patterson and Will Studd attached a CellScope (winner of a PopSci Best of What's New award in 2008) to a Nokia N8 12-megapixel camera to film Dot’s struggle in her microscopic world. They said Nokia commissioned them to make the film in celebration of CellScope’s potential to improve medicine in the developing world.

CellScope is the brainchild of Daniel Fletcher, a bioengineer at the University of California-Berkeley, who combined a cellphone camera with a 50x magnification microscope.

Watch Dot's adventure below.

Detroit Lives Pt. 1

Detroit is a fascinating place. I've always heard that it's probably the grimiest city in the US. When i attended the Movement Festival (aka DEMF) annually from 2000-2005, I saw first hand what people were talking about.

Basically its a shithole. Beyond what you may envision though. Like.... Brownsville is a shithole yea, but Detroit as a whole is just on another level.
Widespread economic depression is visible on nearly every block. The downtown area is almost completely dead on any given day. But.....for one weekend every year, Detroit is the shit.

I'll let the video break down the cause of Detroit's demise, but from what I know, Detroit was supposed to be what NYC is now. The city was built around the blossoming auto industry, and meant for approx. 8 million inhabitants. We all know how GM turned out, and Detroit suffered dearly from it. Theres barely 1 million people living there currently, creating this eerily desolate city.

I'm sorry for the shitty youtube links, but the original video would not embed properly, but check this out. It's very interesting and touches on a lot of subjects, including the birth of techno music and how it rose from poverty and heartache.....like most great music.

Sacha Baron Cohen to Play Freddie Mercury

Borat/Ali G/Brüno mastermind Sacha Baron Cohen will dust off his spandex onesie and return to the screen as late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in a yet-untitled biopic, Deadline reports. Academy Award-winner Graham King (The Departed) has already signed on as a producer, and two-time Oscar nominee and biographical drama specialist Peter Morgan will pen the story. Yes, this is really happening.
Baron Cohen has actually stepped into Mercury's assless chaps before: Introducing Green Day at the 2005 MTV Europe Awards as Borat, Cohen role-played, "Hello it is me, Freddie Mercury. I joking, he die of AIDS." With the producer of Traffic and the writer of The Last King of Scotland onboard, though, we're guessing Cohen's performance will transcend parody

How to Make Justin Bieber Sound Incredible: Slow Him Down 800 Percent

Courtesy of musician Nick Pittsinger, who used the free program Paulstretch, this is "U Smile" made slower. Like, a lot slower—eight times slower, to be exact. And all of a sudden the not-bad piano pop track sounds like the climactic score to some kind of historical epic, or Dead Can Dance, or, like, Animal Collective, or something. It sounds like the ocean, but, like, in heaven, man. Plus, it's 35 minutes long:
